As technology advances, some smartphones are beginning to be left behind. In the next WhatsApp update, the app will stop working on some older iPhone models.

WhatsApp will release an update on May 5 that, to function, will need to be used on an iPhone with iOS 15.1 or later. This means that iPhones older than 4 years are now at risk.

The list includes the iPhone 5s, whose latest update is iOS 12.5.7. Another affected model is the iPhone 6, which also stopped receiving updates from Apple on iOS 12.5.7, and this applies to the iPhone 6 Plus as well.

“Devices and software change frequently, which is why we regularly review the supported operating systems and make updates,” WhatsApp says on its website.

“Every year, we check which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices may also not have the latest security updates or may lack the functionality needed to run WhatsApp.”
